County payments
Once again the U.S. Senate has included $400 million for the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act, also known as the “county payments” law, in an Iraq supplemental spending bill. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) says he expects it to pass the Senate Appropriations Committee next Thursday, May 15th. If the full Senate passes the bill, it would then need to be reconciled with a version in the U.S. House of Representatives. The original Act expired in 2006, forcing over 700 counties in 39-states to cut budgets and search for other revenue sources.
Airport
With a threat of losing federal funding for a new aircraft control tower at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport in North Bend, State Representative Arnie Roblan (D-Coos Bay) is seeking additional state funds to secure the project. The airport has never had a control tower, and traffic has been steadily increasing with the growth and success of Bandon Dunes. Rep. Roblan has sent a letter to the Oregon Department of Transportation urging support for the project. The new control tower is among the top 30 approved for funding with $100 million in Oregon Lottery proceeds available. Even though it is ranked 19th, the Democrat is urging local residents to send a letter of support. The DOT meets next Tuesday to vote on the funding.
Jobs
The slump in the housing market is reflected in the jobs report for the South Oregon Coast from the Oregon Employment Department. Leisure and hospitality posted the largest increase in Coos County of any published sector in March gaining 80 jobs over the month. However, construction only increased by 30 jobs in March, 70 below the same time period of a year ago. In Curry County, “job growth trends were generally negative in most published sectors with total payrolls falling by 120 jobs” over the past year.
Body
Badly decomposed remains found in Brookings in March have been positively identified as that of a woman reported missing in January. Patricia Mary Cole was hunting for cans with her boyfriend when she disappeared near the south end of the Chetco River Bridge. A search of the area did turn up her purse and a bag of clothes, leading investigators to term her disappearance as suspicious. A cadaver dog search on March 8th led to her body in brush on a hillside between Lower Harbor Road and Shopping Center Ave. Identification was made based on dental records; however authorities were not able to determine the cause of death because of the decomposition of her body.
Grand Jury
A 16-year old Roseburg teenager will be prosecuted as an adult in Douglas County following a drunk driving single-vehicle accident in March that resulted in the death of two teenagers and injuries to another. Jacob Gonzales was 15 at the time of the March 28th accident and did not have a driver’s license. The vehicle he was operating struck a power pole and then a fir tree. He’s been charged with manslaughter, assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants. Gonzales was lodged in the Douglas County Jail Wednesday.
Weigh Station
The City of Brookings has decided to appeal a Curry County Planning Commission denial of a request by the Oregon Department of Transportation to move the Hwy. 101 weigh station to a new location in Harbor. City officials say moving the station is crucial to their plans to install a traffic light at the intersection of Constitution Way and Hwy. 101 to improve traffic safety. However, the Planning Commission felt the move to the east side of Hwy. 101 between the two McVay Lanes was also not safe for neighboring residents. The Planning Commission reportedly felt ODOT did not completely address the safety concerns and voted 6-0 to deny their land use application. Brookings officials say they believe they have a strong argument for overturning the decision before the Curry County Board of Commissioners.
Rhododendron
Rhododendrons are blooming along the Oregon Coast and many colors can be seen within the botanical gardens at Shore Acres State Park west of Coos Bay. This Sunday, as part of the Mother’s Day free celebration, events will be held in the garden between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Southwestern Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will be on hand to talk about Rhodies, and the Friends of Shore Acres will provide refreshments in the Garden House, while the Old Time Fiddlers play in the pavilion.
Beautification
Motorist entering Reedsport from Hwy. 38 on the east will be treated to a floral welcoming. The Old Towne Reedsport Merchant Association has taken on a project of hanging huge flower baskets on old light posts in Old Towne. The project is expected to be completed by July 1, 2008.
Reed
His early years were spent growing up in North Bend, Tillamook and Florence. Thirty-seven year old Scott Reed is still on the Oregon Coast, but soon he will be the new principal at Taft High School in Lincoln City. Reed, who is the school’s current assistant principal, will replace Steve Kilduff who is retiring in June. Reed was born in Georgia, but his father was a helicopter pilot in the military.
Prostitution
“It’s a big city problem.” However, with the growing Internet – prostitution is moving out of the big cities. The Lincoln City Police Department on the Central Oregon Coast recently conducted a Prostitution Sting operation and netted a couple of “johns.” Vice officers became interested after an alleged prostitute was arrested in March in motels in both Lincoln City and Newport. She reportedly advertised her services on the Internet “Craig’s List.” At the end of April and beginning of May, police ran their own advertisements and used a female police officer posing as a prostitute. On May 2nd, a 46-year old male from Tualatin was arrested for soliciting sexual services, as well as a 76-year old male from Albany. Both men were lodged in the Lincoln County Jail at Newport.
